Counseling Psychology (MA) Program

Curriculum

All M.A. Counseling Psychology students are required to take the following courses:

Theories of Counseling & Psychotherapy
Lifespan Development
Psychological Appraisal & Assessment
Diversity & Cross-Cultural Psychology
Professional Issues & Ethics
Adult Psychopathology
Substance Abuse Evaluation & Treatment
Research & Evaluation in Psychology
Consultation, Collaboration, and Community Partnerships
Group Counseling & Psychotherapy
Capstone Project Seminar

Counseling Psychology students also must complete the following field training sequence and linked seminars:

Practicum Field Placement I
Practicum Seminar I: Helping Relationships, Part I
Practicum Field Placement II
Practicum Seminar II: Helping Relationships, Part II
Internship I
Internship Seminar I
Internship II
Internship Seminar II

In addition, students are required to take a minimum of nine hours of electives. Please note that not all electives are offered every semester and must have sufficient enrollment to run.

Elective options include:

  • Couples and Family Counseling
  • Evidence Based Practice
  • Child & Adolescent Behavioral Disorders & Treatment
  • Advanced Substance Abuse Treatment
  • Trauma Theory and Disorders
  • Spirituality and Psychology

Finally, all students must participate in a Capstone Project Seminar that culminates in the production of an independent scholarly project. The Capstone Project will demonstrate the student’s ability to think about and evaluate critically important issues in the field of professional mental health counseling and the skills and roles of a professional mental health counselor. The finished project will be planned and conducted under the supervision of the Seminar Instructor and will involve both a substantial written paper and an oral presentation in the Seminar.
