CX 510—Theories of Counseling & Psychotherapy

This course provides students with a theoretical foundation for counseling. It introduces them to the major psychological models for understanding human behavior and reviews the major contemporary approaches to treating its dysfunction. Among the models examined include the psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive- behavioral, person-centered, and systemic. After reviewing these models in historical and sociocultural perspective, students will examine the techniques central to each and will learn to conduct effective treatment interventions derived from contemporary, evidence-based practice.
