Director, Department of Organizational and Leadership Psychology [back to top]
The Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology announces its search for a Director of the Organizational and Leadership Psychology Department.
MSPP is a vibrant, growing institution enrolling approximately 500 full-time students in a variety of graduate programs. It strives to be one of America’s preeminent schools of psychology by providing programs that integrate rigorous academic instruction with extensive field education and close attention to professional development. MSPP has assumed an ongoing social responsibility to create programs that educate individuals for psychology-based professional careers including—but not limited to—specialists in many disciplines to meet the evolving mental health needs of society. MSPP is an academic community that fully involves all employed personnel in institution-wide decision-making and development—the voices of faculty as well as those of professional and non-professional staff are encouraged and heard. Personnel are valued and appreciated both for their contributions to the School and for their own individuality. The School is located in the West Roxbury section of the City of Boston. Established in 1974 as a 503c3 non-profit private institution of higher education, MSPP is currently housed in its third location. The enrollment growth of the School has led to repeated demands for expanded physical facilities, and the School is again anticipating the need for campus expansion—either in its present location or at another site. MSPP is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, by the American Psychological Association, and by the National Association of School Psychologists.
The Organizational and Leadership Psychology Department will be fashioned from an existing department (Organizational Psychology) and an existing non-departmental affiliated program (Executive Coaching). An anticipated new program to prepare college student personnel staff is expected to be housed in this department; it is planned to enroll students in fall 2011. Other new graduate programs may be developed within the near future—of special interest are psychology-based studies in facilitative leadership, and creative problem solving.
Currently, a three-person core faculty (plus the director) offers the M.A. degree in organizational psychology and both a graduate certificate and a master’s degree in Executive Coaching. (Part-time/adjunct faculty compliment the work of these essential full-time staff.) Each of these programs is offered on a cohort model and makes extensive use of technology to offer blended courses that demand less on campus residence than more traditional programs. The School is interested in building enrollments in these two programs and is also very interested in growing enrollments through the development of additional graduate programming; the director will be expected to play a major role in enrollment building. As program offerings and enrollments expand, the School is anticipating the need to add to the core faculty complement.
The Director of the Organizational and Leadership Psychology Department reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Director works closely with the other three academic department dean/directors, and an array of academic administrative personnel. He/she sits on the School’s Academic Leadership Group and is expected to contribute to the overall academic direction-setting of the institution.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will have credentials suitable for an academic administrative leadership position in a professional school. An earned doctorate and successful experience as a faculty member are required; full-time faculty experience is preferred. Knowledge of the professional world related to the discipline(s) in this department is required; discipline-related work experience or a substantial record of discipline-related consulting experience is preferred. Knowledge and skill in using the broad array of educational technologies is required; experience in Internet-based teaching is preferred (in either blended or entirely online modalities). It is also required that the candidate present a substantial scholarly record that (a) is topically related to one or more of the specialties which currently comprise or are anticipated to be added to the department, and (b) is of sufficiently high quality to warrant a senior-level faculty appointment.
The successful candidate will demonstrate possession of personal integrity; energy; enthusiasm for program building; willingness to undertake demanding and difficult jobs; excellent written and oral communication skills; good judgment and problem solving capabilities; team building, team leading, and team member skills; organizational skills; and a sense of humor.
Procedure: Review of applications will begin October 15, 2010. (Based on the School’s needs and the availability of the selected candidate, this position is anticipated to have either a January 1st or June 1st start date.) Interested candidates should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and a list of at least four professional references with complete contact information. Materials should be directed to:
