Sanford M. Portnoy, PhD

Sanford M. Portnoy, Ph.D. is on the doctoral faculty of the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology, where he also directs the Center for the Study of Psychology and Divorce. He began teaching at MSPP in 1977. He teaches a second year clinical seminar, and the psychology of divorce.His clinical practice focuses on marital therapy, marital separation, and divorce. He is a nationally recognized expert on the use of psychological interventions to reduce the emotional impact and harm of divorce, and has presented workshops and institutes for lawyers’ and judges’ organizations and consultation to law firms on the management of difficult and highly emotional clients, and workshops for mental health professionals on the psychology of divorce and divorce practice.

Dr. Portnoy has written for a number of psychological and family law publications, including a regularly featured series of articles for The American Journal of Family Law. He is the author of The Family Lawyer’s Guide to Building Successful Family Relationships, published by the American Bar Association in 2000.

Dr. Portnoy is a former president of the Massachusetts Psychological Association, and has been a member of the Council of Representatives of the American Psychological Association, and Chair of APA’s Committee for the Advancement of Professional Practice. He is President-Elect of the Massachusetts Collaborative Law Council.
