Lionel S. Joseph, PhD, PsyD

Harvard University, MSPP

Lionel S. Joseph, PhD, PsyD, is Managing Director of the Dr. Leon O. Brenner Center for Psychological Assessment and Consultation at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology, where he is also a core faculty member in the clinical doctoral department and Associate Director of Training in Field Education. Under his leadership, the Brenner Center has grown from one psychologist and one fellow to a unique assessment and training center that provides culturally sensitive psychological and neuropsychological testing in 14 languages and trains interns, fellows, and early-career psychologists. Throughout his career, Dr. Joseph has been committed to community mental health. Before he returned to MSPP in 2006, Dr. Joseph was Clinical Director of the Brighton-Allston Mental Health Association, and was one of the first recipients of the Dr. Stephen D. Hayes Community Mental Health Award for dedication to underserved communities.

In his teaching, Dr. Joseph emphasizes MSPP's integration of classroom instruction, field experience, and personal development. His research interests include trauma and disaster responses; ethics and mental health law; and the history of psychology. Every year he takes a group of students down to Baton Rouge, Louisiana for a week-long immersion experience in providing psychological services across regions and cultures (under the supervision of local psychologists).

Before he attended MSPP (Class of 1995), Dr. Joseph had a first career in historical linguistics. He has been an invited speaker at local, regional, and international conferences, and has numerous publications in linguistics and medieval studies. Dr. Joseph earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, his PhD from Harvard University, and his PsyD from MSPP. He has a small private practice in supervision and consultation.
